The Elks Lodge in Libby has closed.

Open since July 9, 1961, a void in leadership positions has led to the decision, according to William “Bim” Lindsey, a Past District Deputy to the Grand Exalted Ruler and Trustee Chair of the defunct lodge.

“I’m from Troy, so it hurts my heart to see this,” Lindsey said.

He explained that Lodge 2231 had been on probation since July 2018.

“But all the bad things we heard that they couldn’t pay their bills weren’t true,” Lindsey said. “When the older officers left, no one remained to mentor the younger officers and when the membership couldn’t provide a viable slate of officers, the decision was made.”

Lindsey said 116 current members have had their names placed in a virtual Lodge and their privileges are good at any other Lodge.

Libby Lodge members will have 18 months to decide if they want to transfer their membership to any nearby lodges, which include Thompson Falls, Kalispell and Polson.

The building is for sale and interior furnishings, equipment, dishes, appliances, etc. will be offered for sale at a later date.

Lindsey said money from the sale of the building and its contents would be held in a trust for five years if members decided to reform a chapter.

“We hope people will band together and fill the hole this is going to leave in the community,” Lindsey said.

According to elks.org, the Elks organization was founded in New York City Feb. 16, 1868 under the name “Jolly Corks” by 15 actors, entertainers and others associated with the theater. In ensuing years, membership expanded to other professions.

This Fraternal Order was founded “To promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its members; to quicken the spirit of American Patriotism and cultivate good fellowship.”
