The Libby Loggers American Legion baseball teams had a mixed bag of results when they played Glacier.

The Loggers traveled to Glacier last Monday, claiming a 7-6 victory over the Twins B team. But Thursday at home, the A team dropped a doubleheader, 13-0 and 11-0.

Facing the Twins B team in Glacier, the Loggers didn’t fair quite as well against them as they had at home, where they beat them 15-2 on June 5.

Despite a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning — thanks to a line drive to right field by Tripp Zhang and a sacrifice grounder by Donovan Fornall driving in the runs — the Loggers weren’t able to get any hits in the top of the second, and gave away 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Twins had a single hit in the bottom of the third, but made use of it to take back a 2-run lead heading into the fourth.

No one scored in the fourth, with Glacier’s Jack Alton taking the Loggers three up, three down in the top of the inning. The Twins had a single hit in the bottom of the inning, pushing as far as third base with two outs on the board, but second baseman Alex Svendsbye snatched up a grounder for the final out at first.

The fifth saw no more progress for either team as the Twins held their 5-2 lead, but against a fresh pitcher the Loggers got a couple hits and Svendsbye was tagged out advancing to home.

In the top of the sixth, Libby finally got some momentum going at bat.

After Glacier’s Preston Trenery loaded the bases with walks, Shayne Walker hit a line drive to left field for a base hit sending Tucker Masters home to make the score 4-5, Glacier.

Quade Anderson followed up with a single off a grounder to third, driving in Ethan Borden to tie the score 5-5.

Zhang, who got the Loggers started in the top of the first, gave them a lead in the top of the sixth, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Svendsbye to make it 6-5.

The Twins came back a little in the bottom of the sixth, as Libby’s Moxley Roesler-Begalke struggled on the mound, hitting the first two batters, and walking a third. With one out, Jeff Offenbecher took the mound and hit the first batter, giving Glacier its final run of the game.

On the next play, the Loggers closed the inning with a double play. Roesler-Begalke at third base winged a ground ball to Svendsbye at second, who tossed it to Fornall at first for the final out.

In the top of the seventh, Roesler-Begalke made it on base with a walk, advancing to third on Ethan Borden’s fly ball to center field.

With Svendsbye at bat, Roesler-Begalke stole home on the very first pitch, a dropped ball, giving the Loggers their final 7-6 lead.

Offenbecher came back to the mound in the bottom of the inning, giving up one walk but no hits to close out the game.

Despite their good fortune against Glacier’s B team, Libby didn’t fair as well a few days later at home against the A team. They held the Twins to some scoreless innings, but unable to score, dropped both games.

Libby plays next at home during the Big Bucks Tournament at Lee Gehring Memorial Field from Thursday through Sunday.
