CWD update
Residents within 20 miles of Libby can expect a letter soon from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks as they continue to try to educate about Chronic Wasting Disease.
The letter discusses the 10-mile radius initial response area that FWP representatives have talked about in preceding public meetings and distributed materials.
FWP may begin sampling deer in town by late summer. In previous meetings, FWP representatives have said they will likely use live traps to capture deer.
Live deer cannot be tested for CWD.
Sampling will continue outside of town during hunting season.
Lincoln County Road Crews are depositing road-killed deer in a bear-proof container at the Lincoln County Landfill, from which FWP can collect the deer heads for sampling, said Bryan Alkire, the manager of Lincoln County Solid Waste.
The carcasses are then buried four-feet-deep in the county landfill to stop scavengers from reaching them.
Dillon Tabish, FWP Region 1, said FWP has submitted samples for additional deer, and are awaiting results.
