The Libby Loggers American Legion baseball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader against the Mission Valley Mariners July 3 at Lee Gehring Memorial Field, winning the first game 5-1, and falling 19-8 in the second.

In their first game, the Loggers held a steady lead from the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Caden Williams hit a line drive RBI, bringing in Shayne Walker for the first run of the game.

The Loggers held the Mariners off in the second inning as well, going three up, three down in the top of the inning. They followed in the bottom of the second with 2 runs.

Alex Svendsbye had a base hit with a fly ball to center field, sending Trey Thompson home. After two walks for Libby, Svensbye scored the 3-1 run for the Loggers, stealing home on a wild pitch.

In the top of the third, the Mariners managed a run, and kept Libby from adding any more in the bottom of the inning.

But, the Mariners couldn’t get a hit in the top of the fourth, and gave up two more runs to Libby in the bottom of the inning.

Tripp Zhang had an RBI off a grounder to right field, bringing Tucker Masters home to make the score 4-1. Next up to bat, Quade Anderson got a walk, but not before Zhang made his way home from third on a wild pitch, giving the final 5-1 score for the game.

In their second game, the Mariners came out hard and fast in the top of the first, scoring 5 runs before a fly ball to Masters in left field ended the game when Masters snapped it off the Moxley Roesler-Begalke at second for the final out of the half inning.

The Loggers weren’t beaten yet, and Williams had 2 RBIs on a hard ground ball to right field, bringing in Zhang and Anderson.

The Mariners scored 3 more runs in the top of the second, and the Loggers responded with two in the bottom of the inning, with RBIs for Zhang and Anderson.

Libby wasn’t able to catch back up though, and in the third inning made no runs to match Mission Valley’s 3 runs.

The Mariners added only 1 run in the top of the fourth, with Xavier Fisher scoring on a wild pitch. But the Loggers were able to cut the scoring short for Mission Valley after a ground out to Roesler-Begalke at third, who was able to make the throw to first baseman Donovan Fornall in time.

Libby responded with 1 run in the bottom of the fourth, after Anderson stole home. But, a double play followed that ended the inning.

In the fifth and six innings, the Mariners were able to still outpace the Loggers, scoring 7 runs to Libby’s 3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Zhang and Anderson each had another RBI, and Masters followed in the sixth with the final Logger RBI of the evening.
