A pedestrian died after stepping in front of a vehicle near Mile Marker 20 on State Highway 56 on Dec. 21, say Montana Highway Patrol officials.

The collision occurred in the northbound lane about 8:40 p.m. First responders declared the victim, who was identified only as a 66-year-old man, dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the man was intoxicated. He may have intentionally stepped in front of the oncoming Chevrolet Cobalt, authorities said.

The motorist, an 18-year-old from Idaho, was not injured in the collision, officials said.

Authorities have not yet notified the victim’s next of kin.
