After falling hard in a double header against Florence Thursday — ending both games down 24-1 — the Trojans traveled to Bonners Ferry Saturday for a 19-15 win to end the week.

Saturday saw the first game senior Annie Day has pitched for the Trojans since her sophomore year.

Junior Mazzy Hermes, who closed out last season for the Trojans and has looked to be their starting pitcher this season, took a grounder to the knee during the second Florence game Thursday that removed her from the game.

Senior Tristyn Winebark stepped in for Hermes, but she has been struggling with injuries and hasn’t had the chance to paractice her pitching much, said Troy Head Coahc Keith Haggerty.

Still, Winebark performed well, Haggerty said.

Day had not played yet this season, lacking the necessary ten practices behind her. The last Haggerty said Day pitched at all in a game was over the summer during league play.

“She’s settling in a little bit. She can definitely throw some strikes,” Haggerty said of Day on Thursday.

Against Bonners Ferry, Day went seven innings with nine errors and a .474 strike percentage.

Haggerty agreed that Day is a good athlete who understands the value of training and is willing to put the effort in to improve her game.

But she’s not alone.

Haggerty noted the improvements that junior second baseman Izzy Ramirez and sophomore shortstop Talise Becquart have made over last season.

Even against the hard-hitting Florence offense, they had some good plays, he said.

He also noted freshman Olivia Ramirez and her sister, senior Emily Ramirez, who is also on the track team.

It’s the first year playing softball for the Trojans for both sisters, and they have come out ready to work, Haggerty said. Both stayed late the night before the Florence game to train.

“It says a lot when the kids want to do that,” he said.

Still, between sickness, injury and competing school activities, the Trojans have a lot of things they have to work around as they strive to improve, he said.

“That’s how it’s been this season,” he said. “We just have stuff that slows us up, but they will get it.”
