Following a spate of scams reported to Lincoln County dispatchers, the Libby Police Department on Wednesday distributed FBI Fraud Alert fliers downtown.

The flier describes two common online scams and includes a link to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

The two scams are outlined in the form of questions.

“Are you about to cash a check from an item you sold on the Internet, such as a car, boat, jewelry, etc?” is one question; the other is “Are you sending money overseas?”

Each question is followed by additional questions that illustrate common tactics taken by fraudsters, including writing a check for more than an item’s selling price and being notified of winning an international lottery that the potential victim did not enter.
