Montana Department of Natural Resources Public Notification Upper Flower Creek Prescribed Burn Project The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Libby Unit, will begin the fall prescribed burning program this month. The State uses prescribed fire as a management tool to reduce slash and hazardous fuels that were created by harvest activities, and to prepare sites for planting and/or natural regeneration. This tool is also used to restore the natural fire process to the landscape. Prescribed burning is planned on State Land in the following area: Excavator piles: Flower Creek Drainage T30N R31W S16+S20 - 520 acres As conditions allow, this Unit will be burned between the months of October and November 2018. The harvest unit consists of machine piles along the Upper and Lower Flower Creek Road. Smoke will be visible from town and has the potential to impact Libby, MT for a few days. The Upper Flower Creek Timber sale was completed during the Summer of 2017 and Spring of 2018. This project was taken on by the DNRC to continue efforts in protecting both natural resources and residents in Lincoln County. The project greatly reduced fuels and potential impacts associated with a wildfire, with the intention of protecting the Libby watershed in the Flower Creek Drainage. The DNRC will continue to partner with the Kootenai National Forest and Lincoln County Local Government to ensure clean drinking water for the town of Libby, MT. All prescribed burns on the Libby Unit must comply with air quality regulations, which are guided and monitored by the Montana/Idaho State Airshed Group. Understanding that smoky conditions can be unpleasant, burning will take place when air dispersion and weather forecasts are favorable. Every effort will be made to mitigate smoke effects and reduce impacts to the public. Please be careful when traveling in the Flower Creek area and be aware of people and equipment that may be present in the smoke. Additional notifications will be posted on the Kootenai National Forest Facebook Page, the DNRC Facebook Page, and the Lincoln County Emergency Management Facebook Page. We will be utilizing the Lincoln County Code Red system for notification on the day of the burn. We appreciate the community for being supportive of our program and we value your continued support. For more information on the burning project, please contact Logan Sandman, Fire Management Officer, 406-293-2711. Published In THe Western News October 12, 16, 2018 MNAXLP
