Undefeated, Libby strives for better
With a a win in three over Polson and Columbia Falls, the Libby High School volleyball team is 7-0 in conference and 11-0 overall.
Libby Head Coach Cindy Ostrem Johnston said that they are grateful for their success, but aware of where they can continue to improve.
Against Polson, solid wins in all three sets came with a low attack percentage for the Lady Loggers. The team has exceeded the .300 goal Ostrem-Johnston set early in the season, but ended at Polson with a .151.
Seniors Mehki Sykes and Jayden Winslow led on kills, but neither had the attack percentage they have in the past.
Ostrem-Johnston noted that Sykes did a great job shutting down the Polson hitters with blocks.
Libby also came up short of the serving percentages they have had in other recent matches. No Libby player hit 100 percent, though senior Emma Gruber and juniors Ashlynn Monigold and Kylee Quinn all surpassed 90 percent.
Gruber once again led Libby in aces, serving up five during the match.
Ostrem-Johnson also complimented Quinn and Monigold for their performance. “Both did an excellent job coming off the bench and serving well,” she said by email.
Gruber received praise from her coach on a 2.56 serve receive ratio, and led the team with 11 digs.
Though the Lady Loggers had some weak moments in areas they are usually strong, the team came together to still make the win happen, Ostrem-Johnston said.
“Our setting/hitting was off tonight, but the blockers at the net and the back row defense picked up the slack,” she said.
The Lady Loggers’ Homecoming Week match against Browning is tomorrow at Ralph Tate Memorial Gym in Libby. The froshmore match starts at 2 p.m, followed by junior varsity at 3:30 p.m. and varsity at 5 p.m.
