Troy track qualifies two for state
Two Troy High School track and field athletes will be competing in the Class B State Meet today and Saturday.
Senior Hunter Leighty and sophomore Ella Pierce both qualified for multiple events.
During the Western Class B Divisional last week, Leighty placed in the top six in the 100m, 200m and 400m dashes.
Leighty made a personal best time in the 100m dash during the preliminary round, with 11.79 seconds, yet finished the final in fourth with 11.94. Every participant in the 100m dash had similarly slower times between the preliminary and final rounds.
In the 200m dash, Leighty qualified with a time within .03 seconds of his personal record, and in the 400m dash he was within .41 seconds.
Leighty was out of competition for about a week late in the season with a muscle injury, according to Head Coach Neil Newton. Yet, since returning, his time off has not slowed him down.
Pierce qualified in both the 100m hurdles and the high jump.
Her time in the hurdles has been falling all season, taking over a second and a half off since the beginning of April. Her personal record of 18.16 seconds at the Western Class B Divisional put her in fifth place.
On the high jump, Pierce added four inches in the first month of competition, but has been unable to best 4 feet, 8 inches since the end of April. Still, that jump got her second place at the divisional and qualified her to advance to state.
While their other teammates did not qualify for state, several did get personal records in their events.
Those include junior Hunter Jordan (13.43) and sophomore Brodie Gravier (13.62) in the 100m dash, sophomore Ricki Fisher in the 300m hurdles (49.45), junior Tyler Gromley in the shot put (36-01.5) and discus (93-04), Gravier in the long jump (16-03), freshman Liz Morkeberg in the 200m dash (31.27) and the javelin (51-11).
Senior Royal Johnson also had a season record in the shot put (28-07), and Pierce had a season record in the 200m dash (29.91)
