Carvey pitches 3-0 shutout over Cougars
The Libby Loggers baseball team kept the Clark Fork Cougars from scoring a single run while Logger pitcher Tim Carvey stuck out 9 innings and over 100 pitches during a 3-0 Logger win Friday.
Carvey struckout 10 Cougars over the course of the evening, while only allowing three hits and giving up four walks.
In the third game of the season, Carvey also set a new team precedent for the Loggers. In the previous games, Manager Kelly Morford has swapped out pitchers much earlier in the game, citing early-season fatigue.
But Carvey did not seem to tire as he pitched through the full nine innings.
The lack of fielding errors — which have cost Libby more than one run in previous contests — also helped to keep Clark Fork off the scoreboard.
Yet, the Cougars did not make it easy on the Loggers. The first play that did not end in an out came for the Loggers when Garrett Gollahon singled on a line drive to left field in the bottom of the second inning.
But Gollahon was picked off at first two plays later for the final out of the half inning.
The two teams kept each other from passing beyond first base until the bottom of the fourth. Carvey stole his way home on an error as Chris Auge stole third.
On the next play, Quade Anderson hit a grounder to third base, but Auge made it home before Coug catcher Kelly Butts-Spinito could get the ball and tag him out.
Yet, the contest continued to see strong defense for most of the rest of the game out of both teams, with Libby only breaking through for another run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Anderson doubled on a line drive to right field, sending Auge home from first base, scoring the final run of the game.
The next home game for the Loggers is Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. against the Kalispell Lakers.
