The Lady Loggers came back from three losses at the Butte Tournament last weekend to a lopsided win against the Lady Bulldogs Monday.

From the first inning, Whitefish’s prospects did not look good, as senior pitcher Khalyn Hageness ended the half inning with two strikeouts.

By the end of the inning, Libby already had a 6-0 lead.

While the Lady Bulldogs were able to hold Libby to only one run in the next two innings, they were unable to add any runs of their own.

The Lady Loggers followed up in the fourth with four more runs.

Whitefish fought to get back under the 10-run margin needed to continue the game, but were unable to catch back up to the Lady Loggers.

In the top of the fifth, Libby junior first baseman Bridgett Haskins closed out the game, making all three outs against the Lady Bulldogs, with two ground outs and a fly caught in foul territory.

After a weekend facing Hamilton — ranked number one in southwest Montana — in a 5-4 loss despite out-hitting Hamilton 6-3, Head Coach Dean Thompson said he was happy with how the team had played in the Butte Tournament.

“We know that we’re going into the state tournament, and we have to play better,” he said. “We have to play better and we just have to get some hits.”

With a regular season game against Columbia Falls at home Friday at 6 p.m., and the state tournament starting Thursday, May 24, every game matters, Thompson said.

“We just have to play every game from now until the end of the year as — every game has to be our best game,” he said.

But that focus is one that has been there all season as well, with the goal of improving from week to week and from day to day.

“Our goal here is always to win a state championship, and our goal’s never changed,” he said. “I think that (the team) feel that we can put things together. We have a good opportunity to do well at the state tournament.

“We’re ready,” he said.

Libby’s final game of the regular season will be against Columbia Falls on Friday at 6 p.m. at Remp Field, with junior varsity at 4 p.m.
