Sign-up begins for Troy community reading program

On page B1 of the Friday, March 16 Western News story “Sign-up begins for Troy community reading program,” we reported that Troy Public Schools is providing a free copy of the book “Wonder” to every family with a child enrolled.
However, Troy Schools Librarian Kay Randall told us that the program will provide a free copy to any family living in the district, including families without a child in their household.
“We’re hoping for it to be very multi-generational,” Randall said by email.
In addition, anyone living outside the district who wishes to participate may do so with their own copy of the book, or a hardcover copy can be purchased for $10.
Books will not be distributed prior to the Thursday, April 5 kick off event, Randall said. Books will be handed out at the event, which will also feature a fun activity to get things started.
Discussions will not begin until Wonder Week, from Monday, May 14 to Friday, May 18.
Randall said the school would love to have everyone attend the April 5 kick off event, but anyone who cannot make it will be able to pick up their book after April 5 at the Troy High School library Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Families can sign up now by emailing mtlibrarian@troyk12.org. Those unable to access email can call the school secretary at 406-295-4520.

Troy Public Schools are kicking off “1 Book, 1 Community,” a community reading program, with a free copy of the book “Wonder” for every family with a child enrolled in Troy schools.

After families have had the opportunity to start reading the book, a kick-off event will take place Thursday, April 5 with community discussion and engagement about concepts from the book, including a community and school kindness challenge, Randall said.
The schools will host a “Wonder Week,” beginning Monday, May 14, with cafeteria discussions in theme with those that take place in the book, connecting music to themes from the book, craft activities and a community dramatic reading of selections from the book.
The week will culminate Friday, May 18, with a matinée and evening showing of the movie “Wonder” at the Lincoln Theater in Troy.
Randall said that organizers are considering additional community engagement associated with 1 Book, 1 Community, but discussion of that is ongoing.
The intent of the effort is to get families reading together, Randall said. Since families will have one copy of the book regardless the number of children, the hope is that an entire family would sit down together and listen or take turns reading, then discussing the book and ways they can be kind in their own lives.
The program is supported by a literacy grant from the state of Montana, said Troy Superintendent Jacob Francom.
