Lower entry fee among changes made to annual bed races in Eureka

A handful of changes are in store this year for the bed races that follow the annual Eureka Rendezvous Days.

The entry fee has been lowered from $125 to $50; the route has been changed to eliminate the downhill portion, making it more of a sprint race; and air-filled tires and steering mechanisms will be allowed, a news release states.

The beds will race the streets of Eureka on Saturday, April 28, immediately following the Rendezvous Parade.

“The Bed Races offer a great opportunity for individuals, businesses, friends and families to showcase their creative talents by constructing or modifying a bed and entering the race,” the news release states. “Participants are encouraged to decorate their beds and wear costumes. Advertising for groups or businesses on the beds is highly encouraged.”

Chris and Jon Wakem, owners and hosts of Borderline Bed and Breakfast, are organizing this year’s races.
