New machine to help diagnose swallowing disorders

Cabinet Peaks Medical Center will soon take delivery of a Medicapture medical video recorder for use in the diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders.

The piece of equipment is being purchased through the Cabinet Peaks Foundation’s departmental grant program, according to a news release.

The item will be used by the medical center’s Rehab Services department to record video of modified barium swallow study tests that physicians and speech-language pathologists use to diagnose swallowing disorders.

Also known as dysphagia, such disorders might affect as many as 15 million people in the United States, with about 1 million new diagnoses made every year, the news release states.

“The Medicapture Recorder is used to record and save a continuous video of MBSS,” the news release states. “(It) captures video that can be reviewed multiple times, start and stop when needed, and will increase the accuracy of the interpretation of the study, thereby improving the accuracy of the results. Medicapture will also allow this digitized assessment to be shared with other facilities, improving continuity of care for the patients at CPMC.”
