Loggers fall 13-3, 8-7 at District
The Libby Loggers fell to the Glacier Twins on Thursday (13-3) in the first round of the American Legion League Baseball Class A West District Tournament before finishing their season with a back and forth battle with the Kalispell Lakers in an 8-7 loss on Friday, ending their tournament run.
Glacier went on to play Bitterroot for the district championship.
After only a walk in the top of the first against Glacier, a homerun from Glacier’s Coby Clark-Dickensen put the first three points on the board in the bottom of the inning.
Moxley Roesler-Begalke came through in the top of the second with a sacrifice ground out to shortstop, sending Caden Williams home for the first Libby run, and making the score 3-1, Glacier.
But the Twins were relentless early, adding two more runs on clean plays in the bottom of the second, and racking up five more in the bottom of the third. The Twins succeeded with singles and doubles, scoring more than one run off of sacrifice outs.
After a triple from Glacier’s Terek Bistodeau brought in the final run of the third, Williams caught a fly in left field to end the inning with the Twins up over the Loggers 10-1.
In the top of the fourth, Libby’s Quade Anderson reached first on an error at shortstop, and a series of base hits put him on third with one out on the board when Alex Svendsbye came to bat. Svendsbye grounded out to the shortstop, but Anderson made it home, bringing the score to 10-2.
Though a strikeout ended the top of the inning with no more Libby runs, the Loggers held the Twins in the bottom of the inning. Glacier pushed into scoring position, with a runner on second and third, but first baseman Trey Thompson caught a pop out to end the inning before the Twins could score.
The Loggers battled into the top of the fifth, and after Tim Carvey kicked things off with a double off a grounder to left field, two walks followed and the bases were loaded with Loggers.
A pop out and a strikeout followed, and with two outs and a 0-2 count against Jeff Offenbecher at bat, Carvey took advantage of a passed ball to score Libby’s third run just before the final strike.
With a 10-3 lead, the Twins scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.
The next morning, the Loggers came up against the Lakers, a team they had recently beaten in close doubleheader games at home.
The first inning saw Libby stymied, with Williams out advancing to home and Walker left at third when the final out fell. In the bottom of the inning, the Lakers established an initial 1-0 lead on a walk with Anderson pitching.
With two outs against the Loggers in the top of the second, Moxley Roesler-Begalke reached home on an error to tie things up 1-1. But, the Lakers came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice on Libby errors.
In the top of the third, walks put Loggers on first and second with two outs, but Libby was unable to move them further before the end of the half inning. Another run for the Lakers off an error at third put Kalispell up 5-1.
It wasn’t until the top of the fourth that the Loggers really started to heat up.
WIth two outs, Shayne Walker singled on a hard ground ball to center field, logging an RBI when Ethan Borden reached home. After a walk, Jeff Offenbecher singled on a grounder to center field, sending Walker home and closing in on Kalispell, who now lead by only a single run.
The Loggers held the Lakers in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the top of the fifth.
Roesler-Begalke had the first run of the inning, scoring on a hit-by-pitch for Carvey. Williams followed with a single on a grounder to shortstop, sending Svendsbye home for a 6-5 Libby lead, despite a forced out on Carvey advancing to second.
But Libby was unable to repeat their hold on Kalispell in the bottom of the fifth, and Ben Corriveau’s double off a line drive to center field gave Kalispell’s Grant Marsh time to reach home from first and tie the score once again.
A hard ground ball to left field gave Corriveau a run, and Kalispell the lead, 7-6, before a strikeout from Anderson on the mound ended the inning.
With two outs against Libby in the top of the sixth, Ayden Williamson singled on a fly to left field, and Roesler-Begalke scored the tying run, 7-7. But Williamson was tagged out advancing to second, bringing Kalispell back to the plate.
Walker fought well from the mound in the bottom of the inning, striking out two despite letting one walk. But that walk for Kalispell’s Ryan McDonald came back to hurt before Walker could get the final strikeout of the inning.
A hard ground ball from Kalispell’s Chad Queen gave him a single, but also bought him an RBI as McDonald reached home from first, retaking the lead for the Lakers.
In the top of the seventh, the Lakers held Libby down, ending the Logger’s season with a tight 8-7 Kalispell win. On Saturday, Kalispell fell to 6-5 to the Bitterroot Bucs.
