After weather canceled two away games in a row, the relatively young Troy High School softball team faced a 19-2 loss at home to Priest River March 29, largely decided in the third and fourth innings.

Head Coach Keith Haggerty was more than pleased with what he saw from this relatively untested team, though.

“This is the first live pitching they’ve seen other than us coaches, for the most part, throwing at practices,” he said. “I think with what we have, with the young group, they’re just going to keep getting better and grow tighter.”

Haggerty noted that there were jitters early in the game, but that the performance from players improved as they got past that.

“We actually feel more confident with this team than we have with some teams in the past,” he said. “The bats up and down the lineup are better than we’ve had in the past.”

Haggerty said that finally seeing how the team performs in an actual game gives both the coaches and the players perspective on what needs work, and the motivation to put in that work.

“They all can get better and they all will, for sure,” he said. “But some of the kids, again, with their bats, we’re really excited and can’t wait to see more out of them with that.”
