Libby junior Ryggs Johnston captured a title on Saturday at the Western A Divisional golf tournament at the Hamilton Golf Club.

Johnston shot a 63 for medalist honors and an 11-shot victory.

Carson McDaniel of Polson, 76, was third.

The Whitefish girls took the team title thanks to Gracie Young placing second with an 89 and Ella Shaw tied for third with a 92.

Tricia Joyce of Butte Central was the medalist with a 77.

The Polson boys and girls finished second.

“On the boys side we didn’t have a great team outing,” Libby coach Dann Rohrer said via email. “(They) missed the fourth team qualifying spot (by) placing fifth. Ryggs did play great, winning the division shooting a low score of 63 to tie the course record.”

In addition to Johnston, Andrew Freese and Sebo Sanders qualified for state, placing 24th and 30th, respectively.

The girls team, Rohrer said, had a great outing.

“They placed fourth, qualifying them for a trip to the state tournament,” he wrote. “Just five months ago we didn’t have a girls team and now we have a team on their way to the state tournament. The girls have worked very hard to learn the game and very quickly raised their skill level.”

Rohrer noted that Sammee Bradeen, playing in her first divisional tournament, scored 101 for a ninth-place medal.

Also placing in the top 30 individual scorers were Khalyn Haggness (23rd), Allie Snyder (24th) and Sydney Croucher (29th).

The top four teams along with the top 30 individuals with the lowest scores qualify for state play, which begins Thursday in Sidney.
