Polson Invitational

Ryggs Johnston won another golf title while the Polson boys and Whitefish girls claimed team honors on Monday at the Polson Invitational at Polson Bay Golf Club.

Johnston shot 63 to best the field by seven shots. Derek Wolff of Frenchtown was second with a 70.

The Polson boys, with Carson McDaniel (76), Matt Hobbs (77) and Trey Kelley (79) placing 3-4-5, posted a 315 team score. Stevensville, 330, was second.

Courtney Ockler of Frenchtown was the girls medalist with a round of 87. Brooklyn Olson of Ronan was second with a 93 and Gracie Young of Whitefish was third with a 95.

The Whitefish girls had a team total of 426. Polson, 440, was second.

Frenchtown Invitational

Libby star Ryggs Johnston shined bright yet again on Wednesday at the Frenchtown Invite.

The junior standout from Libby fired an eight-under 64 at The Ranch Club, besting the field by 12 strokes and continuing his reign atop Class A.

Johnston, who has not lost a high-school tournament in Montana since his freshman season, shot an impressive 29 on the front nine and followed it up with a 35 on the back.

The race for second was won — at least in the first round — by Polson’s Carson McDaniel, who shot 38 on both nines for a four-over 76.

The Pirates — led by McDaniel and Matt Hobbs, who is third after firing 80 on Day 1 — trail Hamilton in the team competition by two strokes going into the second round.

Johnston and Polson will look to take their respective tournament titles when play resumes at 10 a.m. today at King Ranch Golf Course in Frenchtown.

“Ryggs had another great day on the links,” Libby Golf Coach Dann Rohrer said via email. “He continues to maintain his quality of play day after day a tribute to his dedication and hard work, not easy to do in the game of golf. The girls had some great scores, Allie Snyder has put it a lot of hard work and it is paying off. Sammee Bradeen and Emily Carvey had a good day also and continue to improve.”
