Whitefish girls are Western A x-country champs

FRENCHTOWN — The Whitefish girls edged Corvallis for the Western A divisional cross country title on Saturday, preventing a sweep of the team titles by the Blue Devils.

Polson’s Beatrix Frissell outlegged a pair of Hamilton runners by four seconds to win the individual title and Pirates teammate Naima Crowl finished fifth in 19:21. Whitefish, led by Ella Greenberg in sixth, placed four runners in the top 15 to pull together a top team score.

Polson finished third, 11 points back, despite placing three runners in the top nine. Columbia Falls was seventh and Libby eighth.

The Columbia Falls boys finished third overall, well behind Corvallis, which won the team title by 31 points. Corvallis’ Anders Watt won the individual title by four seconds in 16:20.8 and the Devils placed four scorers in the top 17.

Gabe Knudsen finished fifth in 16:32.2 to lead three Wildcats in the top 14. Polson’s Quin Stewart finished 11th and Whitefish’s Miles Vrentas 15th.

Polson finished sixth as a team, Whitefish eighth and Libby 10th.
