Habitat for Humanity benefit

This Thursday and Friday, volunteers with Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity will bag groceries at a local supermarket to raise money for homebuilding.

The volunteers will be working in the checkout lanes at Rosauers at 703 9th St. Libby on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17.

Shoppers can choose to add a tax-deductible donation to their grocery bill to support the local housing nonprofit, which organizer Susie Rice says has built 12 homes in south Lincoln county since 1996.

“The goal of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing one family at a time by building simple, affordable homes with families who would not qualify for a traditional home loan,” Rice said via email. “The uniqueness of Habitat for Humanity is that the mortgage on the house is interest free.”

In addition to paying a mortgage, Habitat for Humanity home recipients must invest sweat equity into their homes.

Rice also noted that Habitat for Humanity “depends on the help of the local community to build and to fund the homes.”
