Birds of Prey Day, operations meeting at Libby Dam May 20

Libby Dam will host its sixth annual Birds of Prey event 10 a.m. May 20 at the Libby Dam Visitor Center, followed by a 2 p.m. presentation on annual water operations for Lake Koocanusa.

One highlight of this year’s presentation will be the story of “Beauty” the bald eagle, who was nursed back to health by licensed wildlife rehabilitator Janie Veltkamp of Birds of Prey Northwest after being found with half her real beak missing. After being fitted with a prosthetic beak, Beauty is able to feed and drink by herself while her own beak slowly regenerates. Visitors will also be able to see live hawks, owls and eagles, talk with wildlife rehabilitators, listen to short talks given every 30 minutes, and attend other presentations.

Those wanting to know more about projected water levels for Lake Koocanusa this summer can attend the annual water operations meeting 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center, presented by Greg Hoffman.
