A Troy man has been charged for assaulting his neighbor with a beer bottle and driving a vehicle without permission.

Jesse David Sedler, 50, is being held on a $25,000 bond for assault with a weapon and failure to register as a violent offender, both felonies, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, which is a misdemeanor. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in the state prison and a fine of $50,000.

According to court documents, Sedler told Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Short that he took a Toyota 4Runner with the keys in it, but didn’t think the owner would mind “because they are friends”. Sedler said he used the vehicle for a few hours Nov. 1, 2016, then returned it the same day.

Several hours later the same day, his neighbor, Donnie Hilliard, confronted Sedler about taking the vehicle. Sedler had a beer bottle and half-inch by 2-foot iron rod in his hand at the time.

The two men wrestled on Sedler’s property. Sedler allegedly hit Hilliard in the head with the bottle. Then Hilliard took the metal bar, pulled a .40 caliber pistol on Sedler and told him he was under arrest.

The vehicle belongs to a woman who lives at the same address as Hilliard.

Hilliard had a wound on his head containing glass fragments. The deputy found a broken beer bottle and metal bar on the ground at Sedler’s property.

In 2004, Sedler registered as a violent offender after being convicted of assault with a weapon. He hasn’t checked in with the sheriff’s office since March 2015 and was listed as a non-compliant violent offender in June 2016.
