Local high school students Create Radio PSA
Submitted by Amy Fantozzi, Lincoln County Public Health Educator Specialist
Some local middle school students will soon be hearing their voices on KLCB in a radio ad they created as part of their eighth grade Tech Tools class with Mr. Kelly Morford and the support of Lincoln County Public Health.
The students highlighted the dangers of e-cigarette use.
Early this quarter, Amy Fantozzi, local Tobacco Prevention Specialist for Lincoln County, went into the classroom and challenged the students to create an ad about e-cigarettes that would be worthy of radio time.
As an incentive, the creators of the “winning ad” would receive a gift card as well as the opportunity to hear their ad on the radio. 8th Grade Student, Isabell Kapan said, “While doing research for the radio ad to help raise awareness of e-cigarettes, I started to realize how much harm it can cause for people and their health. I hope with our ad, people will be more cautious about using e-cigarettes and will choose a healthier option to help them quit smoking.”
In preparation for creating these ads, the students learned about the marketing aspects of a target audience and powerful messaging. The students wrote a script using facts and statistics about e-cigarettes to create an effective ad to target their specific audience. The kids used a program called GarageBand to record and edit the audio.
Finally, music was added to produce a high quality radio ad.
These ads will begin airing on February 20th, and will run for three months. Fantozzi said, “I am excited to continue to work with the Tech Tools class to develop other ads and PSAs about the dangers of tobacco products.”
