Nervous about grocery shopping with your little one? Don’t be! Check out these tips for a stress-free and safe (and maybe even fun!) shopping trip.
Pack and prep: One of the keys to shopping with your baby is to make the trip as quick and as easy as possible. How do you do this? Get organized! Make a list of exactly what you need in advance of leaving the home—and don’t forget to make sure the diaper bag (or backpack!) is fully stocked. Diapers and wipes (or an extra outfit just in case!), a snack or two, and maybe a pacifier and burp cloth should do the trick.
Timing is everything: Avoid the crowds. Hit the aisles when it’s less likely to be busy and noisy—weekday mornings are always ideal or coordinate your trip for right after naptime to avoid the tired cries. Happy babies make for a more pleasant shopping experience.
Don’t forget the entertainment: Pack toys that clasp onto the car seat or the shopping cart handles for your tot to play with while you shop. Toys that clasp on will help avoid being dropped on the ground. Any favorite stuffed animal, blanket or comforting item will do. Distractions are welcomed, but you can also make it fun! Create engagement through song and learning, like pointing out colors, shapes and different foods. As a parent, you know what makes your baby giggle.
Consider a cart cover: Let’s be honest—we all know that shopping cart seats and handles are riddled with germs. Protect your toddler by slipping on a cover so that hands (and mouth) never touch these areas. (Although, it doesn’t hurt to be armed with extra sanitization as well!)
Most of all, don’t stress: It happens…babies have meltdowns. Yes, sure, it feels as if the entire store is judging your parenting skills when your tike has an outburst, but don’t get too embarrassed. It’s happened to the best of us!
