Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness on Dec. 12 announced the hiring of Nancy Schmidt as winter program coordinator. Her first day was Nov. 29.

“She will lead the FSPW 2018 Winter Tracks outdoor education program,” a news release states.

The purpose of the program — centered on a day-long field trip — “is to get the students outside during the winter months and deepen their sense of place, build community and connect to the outdoor world through experiential education,” the news release explains.

Students learn about topics including tree identification, winter birding, avalanche awareness and animal tracking.

The program is available to students in the counties surrounding the Scotchman Peaks — Sanders and Lincoln counties in Montana and Bonner County in Idaho — and some Spokane schools as well.

Schmidt has a bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation administration, a master’s degree in health education and a doctorate in psychiatric epidemiology.
