A Two Bear Air helicopter crew rescued a 74-year-old man in Glacier National Park on Sunday, a day after he became lost while picking huckleberries along Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Park spokesman Tim Rains said the man had stopped with a companion at a pull-out near Goose Curve late Saturday afternoon while returning from Logan Pass. Goose Curve is about three miles below The Loop.

“She came back and he did not,” Rains said.

The woman was able to flag down passing traffic to get help.

A subsequent search-and-rescue operation ended Sunday at about 10:30 a.m. when the helicopter crew, using a thermal imaging camera, spotted the man near Haystack Creek and north of Logan Creek.

Jordan White of Two Bear said Monday the crew hoisted the man to safety.

“He was cold,” White said, but added that the man appeared uninjured and did not need any medical attention.

National Weather Service data from a weather station in nearby West Glacier recorded overnight low temperatures in the mid-40s during the night the berry picker spent in the woods.
