Veteran's Day events honor those who've served
Every year, veterans from Troy and Libby gather around to honor those who have served in the armed forces.
During the morning, the American Legion Post played taps at the veteran’s section of the Libby Cemetery to honor veterans who have passed away.
This year, Libby and Troy High Schools held veterans assemblies, during which veteran guest speakers addressed the students from the schools as the school choirs and bands played. The events were educational for both the students and the teachers, as the speakers spoke about their time and the importance of veterans.
Veterans from the Harper Erdman VFW Post #1548 came and visited with kindergarten students from Libby Elementary on the day before Veteran’s Day. The students shared thank you letters that they wrote to the veterans. The students also made posters for the veterans to show their appreciation for their service.
At the Libby Veteran Memorial in Riverfront Park, veterans and their families gathered around the statue to honor the veterans. Second and third-graders came to sing and sign-language “God Bless America.” Guest speakers, who included County Commissioner Mark Peck and Libby Mayor Brent Teske, gave speeches that thanked veterans.
Peck, who is a veteran himself took time to mention the appreciation he feels from people and the honor he feels to serve during his speech.
“I really appreciate when people thank me for my service,” Peck said. “I would just like to say that it was my honor...and pleasure to serve. I can guarantee that I got a lot more out of my service than the country got out of me.”
To wrap up, the Troy VFW held a free dinner for veterans.
