Think about the future when voting

| November 1, 2016 9:30 AM

To fix social problems, we must do the most good for the most people over time, NOT what is best for a small handful of people immediately.

The root of most of society’s problems can be traced to a lack of education and a failure to value education.

The best way to educate the masses is with public schools that are open to all. Thus, we want to make sure public schools are as strong as possible. We all want to support our kids; that also means supporting schools and teachers.

We can support schools directly with donations to specific programs, posters, license plates, putting athletes’ names in store windows, volunteering at school events, hosting work-release students, and through many other local avenues.

We also need to support our schools by voting for those who want to improve public schools and keep them strong. We should NOT vote for people who have stated that public schools shouldn’t even exist, or who believe that paying taxes to support our public schools should be optional. Such people would weaken public education. Voting in such a manner is voting against our local efforts to support schools.

I am a teacher. I have also worked in EMS for about eight years now; however, teaching is by far the most stressful job I have ever had. A lack of support would make it more stressful, which in turn would make me a less effective educator.

I see far too many people and businesses who go out of their way to support their local schools but then advertise for candidates who want to destroy the greatness of public education.

So I ask you to do two things: Vote, period. And, when you vote, elect people who will make it easier for people like me to serve and mentor the kids who will one day have to lead our nation.
