Weekend Preview: Juniors, RC planes and trapper-era events highlight the Kootenia

This weekend in Libby one can immerse in 19th century fur trading culture, listen to live Celtic music while taking part in primitive Celtic games, watch a parade and watch model planes fly. The Highland Gathering Celtic Games, Junior Fair, Kootenai RC Flyers Fun Fly and the Two Rivers Rendezvous are each scheduled for this weekend with activities, displays, and spectacles for people of all ages.

Junior Fair

The 59th annual Lincoln County Jr. Fair will commence at Asa Wood School gym today from 8 a.m. to around 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Registration for the Junior Fair exhibit started on Thursday, with an 8:30 a.m. deadline today.

The Lincoln County Junior Fair is an annual event open to all children under the ages of 18 in Lincoln County. All youth contestants will show off their baking, crafting, performing, and/or other project talents. Events include a dog show, parade, livestock judging, exhibits and performing arts.

The purpose of the Lincoln County Junior Fair is to promote good sportsmanship and to provide a learning experience for the youth of Lincoln County.

All participants are given ribbons and comments by seasoned judges.

Kootenai RC Flyers Fun Fly

On Saturday, the Kootenai RC Flyers Fourth Annual Fun Fly will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Champion Haul Road. This event is a basic fun-fly for Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) pilots.

All public are welcome.

Two Rivers

Rendezvous

Starting today at 8 a.m., until Sunday at 3 p.m., the annual gathering of modern day mountain men will take place in the remote mountains east of Libby at the Fawn Creek campground on the Fisher River Road, off Highway 37.

Trapper and fur-trade Era authentic clothing and equipment are required for participants.

The Two Rivers Rendezvous is a recreation of the 1820s-1840s rendezvous period. Events include rifle and pistol trails, hawk and knife trails, gunpowder shooting, a mountain man run, peewee and junior activities, and more.

Camping is available. There will be separate modern camps from the primitive camps, for spectators.

Venders will be selling gear and wares.

Kootenai

Highland Gathering Celtic Games

Starting today, the Kootenai Highland Gathering Celtic Games will be held at the Riverbend Restaurant field, on Hwy 37, 13 miles northeast of Libby.

Admission is free tonight, with music by “Broken Whistle” accompanying games. On Saturday, “Broken Whistle” will perform again with the athlete games in swing. Gate admission is $8, those over 65 years of age get in for $5, and kids 10 and under get in for free. On Sunday, the primitive games commence with a $5 payment to compete.

The competition is open to men and women of all ages and experience.
