Resident reports asbestos at former Dairy Queen site, test results due next week
July 13, 5:30 p.m. - An individual called the Lincoln County dispatch to report spotted exposed asbestos and vermiculite on a Highway 2 adjacent property.
The individual reported this from the Dairy Queen demolition site, and claimed that they used to work on “the cleanup crew” and was able to recognize the material.
Dispatch contacted Nick Raines, the Asbestos Resource Program Manager, to check into the location and to do a follow up.
According to Raines, they observed some “suspect material with low amounts of vermiculite.”
“It doesn’t have anything to do with the demolition,” said Raines. “The building itself went through an inspection last year before it was demolished.”
The asbestos looked like it came from a trenching project done in the area, which dug up the suspect material, Raines said.
The EPA was not available to comment on the incident, but according to Raines, EPA officials came in and did an initial clean up, contained the material and ran tests which will be available by next week.
