Greenchain places fourth at Ted Kato
The wrestlers of the Greenchain placed fourth at the Ted Kato tournament held Jan. 22 and 23.
“I thought this weekend was the best that we have wrestled as a whole at a tournament all season,” said coach Kelly Morford. “We had a few guys place well, but beyond that, we had more guys that might not have placed but won multiple matches and racked up some team points. Every team in our division was there, so it was a perfect opportunity to see where we stand in that regard. We beat some divisional opponents that we had lost to previously so that is a good sign for us going into the postseason. They wrestled with great effort in those matches and will need to be able to replicate that in a few weeks at the Divisional Tournament.”
Tim Carvey placed fourth in the 152-pound class. Laine Young finished third at 138. Reed Christensen and Buddy Doolin placed second in the 132 and 103-pound classes, respectively, and Dylan Parrish took the 160-pound class championship.
“Dylan Parrish had a great day and came away with first place,” Morford said. “He is a kid that isn’t afraid to go out there and hit any move in our toolbox. That makes him fun to watch for us coaches. I don’t think he got out of position one time all day, he was just really solid fundamentally and I am excited about how he is wrestling at the end of the year.”
Morford also singled out Reed Christensen as a wrestler who has worked diligently to improve his performance match after match, year after year.
“Probably the highlight of the day was watching Reed wrestle his way into the finals,” he said. “That kid has worked so hard to improve over the last few years. When he was a freshman, wins were pretty hard to come by for him. To see him go from that to wrestling in a championship match at a tournament is just awesome. He beat the Thompson Falls kid in the semis that beat him last week at home, so it was a key matchup for him. As excited as Reed was, his teammates were even more pumped for him. They mobbed him after the semifinal match and that was fun to watch as a coach.”
As the season winds to a close, Morford said his team is well positioned for divisionals.
“It is the goal of every team to wrestle their best at the end of the season and I think we are headed in that direction,” he said. “As inexperienced as this team was coming into to the year, we knew it would be a long process. We just need to keep our focus and power through to the end of the year. Any let downs this time of year can end your season so we need to just stay consistent in our effort and technique and we will be in good shape.”
