Greenchain splits six duals at tourney
The grapplers of the Greenchain had a busy weekend, with dual meets against six different squads during the past weekend. The local boys wrestled their way to two wins, two losses and two ties at the Western Montana Duals.
“It’s always fun to go to a dual tournament like this,” coach Kelly Morford said. “Competing with the team score in mind puts a twist on how matches are approached. Every point and every match matters. We outwrestled every team we faced on a head-to-head level but those forfeits caught up to us on the scoreboard. We knew that would be the challenge going in, but I am proud of the way we competed regardless of the dual scores.”
The Greenchain wrestlers lost duals against Corvallis and Ronan Friday afternoon. Corvallis scored 45 points to Libby’s 30 in their dual match. Ronan outscored the Greenchain 42 to 36.
The boys fought to a 33-33 draw against Stevensville on Friday and picked up their first dual victory of the tourney against Mission, winning by a score of 48 to 18.
The momentum worked in Libby’s favor Saturday, as the Greenchain fought to a 30-30 tie with Columbia Falls and a 42-36 victory over the Glacier JV squad.
“We had some duals that went against us on day one that we could have won if we would have had one or two matches go our way,” Morford said. “That was a huge learning opportunity for us, as I thought we could have battled a little harder for those wins in a few situations. The boys really responded on Saturday and did things like fight off our back and even come back and win a few of those. This is the type of fight we need to show.”
Morford said his squad looks strong as the season heads into the final stretch.
“We have kind of turned the corner and are headed down the final stretch of the season,” he said. “The boys have come a long way but they also know they need to keep getting better. We keep telling them that the divisional tournament is going to be a whole new ball game as far as qualifying them for state. We have some guys that are going to be on the bubble and they need to keep pushing to get better right up until the end of the season.”
