Lady Loggers C Team dominates
The host Lady Loggers went undefeated in the Freshman Basketball Tip-Off Tournament held in Libby on Saturday, Dec. 12. The Loggers, led by nine points from Bridgette Carvey and Syd Geir each, defeated the Troy Lady Trojans 32-9, and later in the day won over the Sandpoint Bulldogs 36-11. In the second game, the Loggers were led by Syd Geir with 17 points, and another nine points from Bridgette Carvey. Sheyla Gallagher and Zoie Spady each contributed five points against Sandpoint. In the first contest Ali Synder shot 100 percent from the field, scoring four points.
The Libby-Troy contest was a very competitive game, according to coach Tony Smith. Lady Trojan point guard Annie Day “was a real handful for us to guard, as was Katelynn Tallmadge,” Smith said. “Both girls are very skilled, physical players and presented some real matchup problems for us early in the game, so we had to work hard to stop them. Bridgette and Sheyla did a great job containing those offensive threats, and our team defense as a whole played extremely well. I was especially pleased with our defensive rebounding effort. The Lady Trojans are very well coached, and it took an outstanding effort on our part to contain them.”
Smith emphasized that man-to-man pressure defense and rebounding is the primary emphasis and will be throughout the season. “I don’t like to see young kids stand around in zone,” said Smith. I think, in the end, it hurts your program at the higher levels, as the athletes move on to the Varsity/JV level. A team at our level might win a few more games playing zone, but I am not willing to sacrifice our basic fundamental defensive skills that would inhibit the development of our players,” he said.
“All in all, it was a good opening weekend for the girls, but we have a ton of work to do to get better, and with the kind of commitment I’ve seen thus far, we will get better.”
“C” team players include: Ashlyn Monigold, Syd Geir, Bridgette Carvey, Amaya Borden, Ciera Lucas, Sheyla Gallagher, Ali Synder, Zoie Spady and McKenzie Proffitt.
