Wrestling team takes third at tip-off tournament
The high school wrestling team took third place during their Havre invite two-day tournament.
“We were very pleased with a third place finish as a team,” head coach Kelly Morford said. “We flipped a lot of matches against opponents that we lost to in the round robin on Friday, which was great to see.”
Morford said that the overtime and one-point matches, win or lose, will help them as the season goes on.
“There were definitely some of those close matches that we could have come out on top on and didn’t but at this point in the season,” Morford said. “It is more about the process of getting better and learning from those matches as opposed to focusing just on the result.
Morford said it is difficult to single out any single wrestler for their performance. Michael Diller won his first ever high school match, and Time Carvey won his first high school tournament.
Reed Christensen and Mason Sams both bounced back from tough days on Friday to wrestle their way into the finals on Saturday.
“It is great for these kids to be repaid for the hard work that they have put in,” Morford said. “But at the same time, we also saw that we have plenty to work on and we need to keep working. It isn’t our goal to wrestle our best the first weekend and I think they understand that.”
