The Trojan tennis teams were on the road in St. Ignatius Friday for matches against Mission and Darby. The Lady Trojans beat Mission, 2-1, and split their match with Darby. The boys fell 4-2 to Mission and lost 3-0 to Darby.

In the first match-up, both Mission and Troy were short-handed, with only three girls playing. Troy’s Allie Brown knocked off Daisie Van Der Bos 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles action. The pair have met twice in competition this year, with Brown capturing both wins.

“She started strong in her first set and controlled the entire game,” said Troy coach Nancy Prieve of Brown’s performance.

In No. 2 singles, Troy’s Kaylee Stecher took Mission’s Alyssa Rith to three sets before falling, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Molly Walters of Troy defeated Sienna Esslinger, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 3 singles.

On the boys’ side of the nets, Troy fell 4-2, winning both doubles matches by forfeit but dropping all four singles matches.

Ben Haggerty fell to Nate Doll, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1; Zach Cotten lost to Andrew Esslinger 6-1, 6-0; Tim Van Elst defeated Liam Hennsley, 6-0, 6-2, and Warren Caster beat Alex Freund, 6-1, 6-2.

“Mission has four strong boys,” Prieve said. “We fought hard but didn’t win any of the singles matches.”

Against Darby, Troy only played one girls match each in singles and doubles, splitting the two. Allie Brown took down Kayla Lambert, 6-2, 6-2, and the doubles pair of Molly Walters and Kaylee Stecher fell to Casey Smith and Jessica Finks, 6-2, 6-0.

The boys played three singles matches, but fell in each of the attempts.

Kyle Woll defeated Ben Haggerty, 6-3, 6-4; Blake Kelton knocked off Zach Cotten, 6-4, 6-4, and Liam Hennsley pushed Darby’s Aaron Hanson to a third-set tiebreaker before succumbing, 1-6, 6-3 and 7-4.
