Libby golf duo tears up Spring Swing Tournament

When the scorer posted a two-under 69 for Libby freshman Ryggs Johnston at the Loyola Sacred Heart Spring Swing Tournament, he turned to Libby coach Dann Rohrer and told him, “that’s going to be a tough one to beat.”

As it turns out, it was. In fact, only one golfer in the field managed to surpass Johnston’s mark, his teammate Jonny Cielak, who posted a four-under 67 for the day.

“Those are special scores,” Rohrer said. “This is a country club course, it’s not an easy one. I don’t remember a team having two players shoot in the sixties. What’s nice is that these guys really support each other, and they really push each other. Ryggs will be better because of Jonny, and vice versa.”

The tournament was Libby’s first competition of the young golf season, with Johnston and Cielak the only boys playing at the varsity level. Coach Dann Rohrer made the decision to have his other three boys, Andrew Freese, Zander Petersen and Buddy Doolin, enter junior varsity competition at the tourney to get a bit more experience under their belts. According to Rohrer, the three JV players, while not shooting the same numbers as their varsity teammates, “did crazy good.”

Freese shot the best round of the three, finishing at 114 on the day. Petersen rolled in at 117, and Doolin shot 155.

On the girls’ side of the ball, Lily Feeback shot 62 and 46 for a total 108 and India Croucher shot 76-70 for a 146.

“Overall, really good scores for the girls,” Rohrer said. “India’s going to get better, too. She’s really working hard, as is Lily.”

The Loggers take to the links again Tuesday and Thursday this week, at Eureka and Bigfork, respectively.
