When the Libby Loggers track team takes the field tomorrow in Ronan, they’ll be in the best position they’ve been in years, according to coach Jim May.

“We’ve had a pretty good turnout,” he said. “The best we’ve had in about five years. We’ve had 56 kids come out for track, 34 of them freshmen and a good core of kids with divisionals experience.”

Leading the charge on the boys’ side of the track will be Dominic Voorhies.

“Dom Voorhies should lead the way with his javelin and in the 400 meter,” May said. “Then we have a bunch of younger boys working their way up.”

Senior Krysten Mossburg is expected to be the girls’ leader.

“Krysten Mossburg is back this year,” May said. “She placed in several events at divisionals last year and she’s looking stronger this year. Plus, we’ve got a lot of young people.”

This year will be different for the Loggers, as they drop into Class B. With five teams in the district they will have to qualify for the divisional meet through a district qualifier, which will be held in Libby in May. The top six in each event qualify for the divisional meet, with the top six from that meet qualifying for state.

This year the Loggers have adopted a new workout and conditioning program, a move May is hoping will help the team as the season goes forward.

“I’m looking forward to seeing if how we have changed our conditioning program will help us out,” May said.

The Loggers open the season tomorrow at Ronan. The first home meet will be the Libby Invitational on April 23. May said the school is still looking for volunteers to help manage the 17-event meet. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Nik Rewerts.
