Beth Schweitzer, a long-time resident of Troy, died on Saturday Sept. 12, at Libby Care Center, with her beloved daughter Suzanne and her husband of 50 years, Marvin Schweitzer, by her side.
Born in 1942 in Libby to Roy and Peggy Maness of Troy, Beth’s childhood highlights included going to the Troy fishing pond, meeting Elvis and her adventures with the neighbors, the Morrisons and the Carrs. She was a lifeguard in the summer and also a waitress at Jack’s Café in high school.
Beth went to college at Eastern Washington to study education in 1964. She transferred to Northern Montana in 1965 and met Marvin Schweitzer. Beth and Marv were married on June 12, 1965, at the Libby Catholic Church. Beth then went on to complete her education at the University of Montana in 1977, finally reaching her goal of becoming a teacher.
Beth retired from teaching in Libby in 2003. She taught in Libby for 26 years, and previously had taught first and second grades in Hingham, second grade in Browning, and first through third grades in a two-room schoolhouse in Croff Wren. She spent her 26 years in Libby schools teaching sixth through eighth grades. She loved teaching social studies and language arts. Her students left her classroom with the knowledge and passion she shared with them about history, along with her excitement for the Iditarod and cribbage.
Beth is survived by her husband of 50 years, Marvin Schweitzer; her beloved daughter Suzanne Streeter of California; her two granddaughters who brought her great joy, Carly and Kayla Streeter of California; her oldest brother George Maness of New Ringgold, Penn.; her youngest brother Rich (and Jan) Maness of Missoula; her nephew Brian Maness of Salt Lake City, Utah and her niece Meghan (Price) Manzer of Missoula.
Beth’s celebration of her life was Friday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Troy Methodist Church in Troy. Memorial gifts may be made to Wings (P.O. Box 1160, Libby, MT 59923). The Wings organization supported and loved Beth during her fight and survival against breast cancer. Arrangements are by Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby.
