Students from Carlan Campbell’s class at Libby High School were challenged to design a care package to withstand serious abuse – and that’s just what they did.

The students had a fictional budget of $200 per team, and were instructed to design a package that would protect an egg from a high-elevation drop. The students were provided a list of available materials, with a cost assigned to each item on the list as well as a maximum available number of each item.

The students decided which items to “purchase” for the construction of their packages and then wrapped their eggs in those packages for testing. The testing was assisted by Challis Crismore and Zane Lindsay of Flathead Electric Cooperative, who brought one of their elevated trucks. Lindsay raised the bucket to 60 feet and dropped the packages from the bucket.

Two of the student teams’ eggs survived the fall. The team of J.J. Davis and Cooper Carlberg were the first to have an egg survive. The team of William O’Connell and Gabe Van Orden were the last to go, with their funky straw design also providing enough protection to keep the egg from breaking.
