Two Loggers named to all-state soccer team
Libby junior forward Cody Wood was named the consensus Northern A Conference top soccer player for 2015. He joined senior midfielder Zander Petersen as unanimous selections to the 2015 Montana all-state soccer team.
Junior midfielder Colin Maloney will represent the Loggers on the Northern A all-conference first team, with junior forward Giovanni Cano and senior goalkeeper Raffael Weber named to the second team.
“Coach Zeiler and I were very happy with the outcome of the all-conference coaches’ meeting,” said Libby coach Mark Petersen. “Having two all-state players and three all-conference players really demonstrates the talent and respect these players have. These young men were recognized as having the top talent among dozens of players in the conference. Cody Wood ended the season with 21 goals for the Loggers, which was the second most in the state behind Corvallis’ Cayden Ayers at 28. Zander Petersen was recognized for his ability to play every position on the field. He was asked to play everything from keeper to striker this season and did it well. The games he missed due to injury were hard for us to compensate for in our formation. He has been a great player for club and school over the years and I’m very proud as his father to coach him for so many years.”
Petersen also praised the team’s all-conference standouts and Logger players who didn’t make the all-conference cut.
“Swiss foreign exchange student Raffi Weber was recognized for his goal keeping skill and his many saves,” Petersen said. “Only two other goal keepers were selected as all-conference in the Northern A. Colin and Giovanni were on each coach’s list as standouts for the Loggers, making them also unanimous selections. Each one of these players made huge contributions to the team, both on the training field and during matches. The team would not have had the success we enjoyed had these players not been on the squad. There were several other Loggers that were nominated for the top spots in the conference, but there are only two teams of 11 players to fill. Each school had a long list of hopefuls.”
The all-state and all-conference players are selected at the end of each season by the coaches throughout the conference. The selections are announced after the state championship game.
