Athletes from Libby and Troy competed in the 40th annual Archie Roe Invitational in Kalispell over the weekend.

Trojan Sean Opland was named the MVP in the meet, placing in all six of his events against some stiff competition, including three AA teams.

Troy’s head coach Neil Newton said Opland continues to impress. “It was another great performance, he really rose to the occasion.”

Opland took first in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes, second in the triple jump, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the javelin.

“Sean started throwing the javelin this year at the county meet and threw one of the top throws for class B”, said Newton. “That left us with a conundrum, do we have Sean compete in the triple jump or the javelin going forward. We let his performance at Archie Roe in the javelin and triple jump decide what he would do at districts. He had his best performance of the year in the triple jump, so we’ll ride that momentum and have him compete in the triple jump at districts.”

Opland scored the only points for Troy and the sole point scorer for Libby was Krysten Mossburg. She took third in the triple jump.

Libby’s head coach Jim May said his team is now set for the divisional meet, which they’ll host May 15 and 16.

“We will enter the kids in most of their divisional events during this Thursday evening’s Flathead Dual,” said May.

“This meet has been happening for over 40 years,” May said. “It will now end because we are moving to Class B. Next year we will be at the District B meet instead of tuning up for divisionals at this fun, relaxing meet.”

Libby host Flathead at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
