A late night alcohol run that took too long for a man waiting for his girlfriend and another man to return resulted in a fight that left one man with multiple stab wounds on April 25.

According to court documents, Jon Legan, 29, of Libby, told Deputy John Davis that when John Williamson returned with Legan’s girlfriend he was concerned for her safety.

The subsequent fight left Williamson with multiple stab wounds, after which Legan fled the scene only to turn himself in the next day to Lincoln County Sheriff’s to face one count of assault with a weapon.

At approximately 2 a.m. on April 25 Cabinet Peaks Medical Center contacted Lincoln County Dispatch about a man receiving treatment for multiple stab wounds.

Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Holzer responded the call, but was unable to talk with the victim because hospital personnel were tending to his wounds.

Holzer left the hospital and visited the scene of the stabbing at 106 Enders Drive. There he found blood splatter throughout the brush in the area. He spoke with the alleged assailant’s girlfriend, Chyanne Smith, who told the deputy that after returning from purchasing a bottle of alcohol with Williamson, Legan began yelling at them in the driveway she said Williamson exited the vehicle and a fight ensued.

Deputy Holzer returned to the hospital where he spoke with Williamson as he was getting chest tubes in preparation for a life flight to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. Williamson told the deputy he was attacked by Legan and only realized he had been stabbed after he fled.

Williamson said he drove himself to the hospital, wrecking in the process. He was aided by another person to get his vehicle back on the road after the accident.

In his interview with Deputy Davis, Legan said he was eating a steak when Williamson and Smith returned.

He said he ran out to the vehicle to check on Smith where Williamson assaulted him and the two men tumbled to the ground fighting.

Legan said he didn’t remember stabbing Williamson and fled the scene when he realized what had happened. He said he ran into the woods, dropped the knife and passed out.

In the morning he said he went to his friend’s house before going to his girlfriend’s house and changed his clothes before turning himself in.

A preliminary hearing has been set by Justice of the Peace Jay Sheffield for Friday, May 22, 2015.

Legan has been charged with assault with a weapon in violation of MCA 45-5-213. Bond has been set in the amount of $150,000.
