Libby hosts county-wide track meet

Temperatures soared and so did the competition at Libby High School’s track during the county meet on Wednesday.

The Libby girls and the Lincoln County boys were crowned county champs at the meet.

Libby head coach Jim May said even though track is often considered an individual sport the county meet brings out the team spirit in the schools. 

“It is important to be the county champs,” May said. “We see the Eureka and Troy kids in a lot of meets and we enjoy competing with them.”

May said heat was a concern, but several Loggers had season and personal bests with the temperatures in the mid-80s. 

“Some of our kids surprised themselves at this meet. We preach to them to not be too surprised at what they accomplish if they work hard,” he said.

Dylon Lane’s javelin throw of 162-02 bumped him up in the conference and put him in the Logger’s top ten in the event.

Krysten Mossburg attempted a state-qualifying jump of five feet in the high jump, coming just shy, but clearing 4-10.

Shyla Stevenson, Asia Jones and Krysten Mossburg all earned a pair of victories for Libby.

For Troy, Sean Opland won five events and set a new county record in the 200-meter dash in the process. Trojan head coach Neil Newton said Opland wasn’t even scheduled to run in the 200 on Wednesday. 

“When one of his teammates had to pull out of the 4x400 relay because of a blister,” said Newton. “That opened up another event for Sean, and the 200 was just about to start.” Opland stepped in and raced to a new county record.

Michael Miller’s time in the 400 came as quite a shock to the Troy coach. “I was really hoping for a 54 by county and maybe a 53 by Archie Roe. His time of 52.01 on Tuesday was the third fastest ran in class B this season,” he said.

Going into the finals of the triple jump, Troy’s Allie Coldwell was the jumper to beat. The last competitor before Coldwell, Emily Mossburg, bested her jump on her final attempt of the day. Showing a lot of grit, Coldwell pushed the mark to 30-03.50 and took first place.  

“Allie is going to find herself in many pressure situations like this and it was great to see her overcome it as a freshman,” Newton said.

Newton said it’s not essential for athletes to earn bragging rights at the county meet. “There is a tremendous amount of mutual respect among the teams of the district,” Newton said. “There was much more cheering on other teams and congratulating other competitors than any manifestation of bragging rights.”

The Loggers and Trojans will both compete in Kalispell at the Archie Roe meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
