Johnston at sixth in PGA Junior

Ryggs Johnston of Libby is tied for sixth place and Coral Schulz of Whitefish is tied for 12th after the first round of the Pacific Northwest PGA Junior Championship at Lake Spanaway Golf Club on Saturday.

Johnston opened with a 73 and is six shots off the pace. Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver, Wash., tops the leaderboard with a 67.

Schulz carded an 81. She trails the leader — Maddie Nelson of Sammamish, Wash., — by seven shots.

Ryan Keenan of Bigfork, 78, is tied for 27th.

All three local golfers are in the 16-18 age division.

Age divisions for the junior golfers are 12-and-Under, 13-15 and 16-18.

This event is open to one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections, champions of the eight PGA Junior Series events, select national junior tournaments conducted throughout the year and special invitees who have yet not reached their 19th birthdays as of the final round of the championship.
