Loggers end season with doubleheader losses

The Libby Loggers didn’t finish the regular season as strong as they had hoped to, getting outscored 32-2 in a doubleheader against the Bitterroot Red Sox.

“We never really got going in either game,” Loggers manager, Kelly Morford said. “As you can tell from the scores.”

The Red Sox jumped on the Loggers early in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring 10 runs on eight hits in the first inning. The Loggers never recovered from the massive left hook the Red Sox hit them with.

“They had a big first inning to start the day and we never got our footing back,” he said.

The lone highlight for the Loggers in the first game came in the top of the second inning when left fielder, Mason Chapel made a diving catch that brought the home crowd to it’s feet.  

The Loggers eventually lost the game in five innings, 12-0.

Things didn’t get much better for the Loggers in the second game, losing 20-2 in five innings. The Red Sox managed to score a run each inning, including an 11-run third inning.

“They are a really talented team and it seemed like every ball they hit fell in for a base hit,” Morford said.

Luke Haggerty had a two-hit game and drove in one run. Jared Winslow went one for three at the plate with a double and drove in one run.

Morford was hoping his team would have finished the regular season stronger.

“It would have been nice to have our 19 year-olds finish up their careers at home in a better fashion, but it just didn’t work out,” he said.

The District Tournament starts Thursday, July 23, and Morford and his team are gearing up to make a run.

“We have a few days to try to get things together,” he said. “I feel like we have a team that could make a run at the District Tournament.”
