Moose spark talk of caution around wild animals

A cow and calf moose were spotted roaming around Libby this week, sparking discussion about safety with regard to wild animals.

While the moose look harmless enough, Montana Fish, Wildlfe & Parks biologist Tonya Chilton-Radandt cautioned residents. “Avoid approaching the moose and give them a wide berth,” she noted in a press release. “The cow could become aggravated if people get close.”

The moose were bedding down in the snow near the Kootenai Valley Christian School on Tuesday, creating concern for some Libby residents. Sheriff Roby Bowe said, “They’re always nice to see, but they are wild animals. People need to be careful and not approach them.”

Fish, Wildlife & Parks spokesman John Fraley explained that the animals are fairly common in Libby, and are likely just looking for food. “Sightings of moose, deer, and bear in town are fairly common for Libby.  Usually these animals are searching for food.  Residents should avoid approaching moose or other wildlife.”
