At Thompson Falls (1-0 in league, 3-3 overall) on Friday the Troy girls’ basketball team fell to the Bluehawks 51-37.

“We came out flat, I think we spotted them 10 points off the bat,” said Troy coach Justin Young. Thompson Falls led 12-4 after the first quarter and didn’t look back.

But if there was another quarter of basketball to play Young said anything could have happened. “In that fourth quarter the girls came around and played the kind of basketball we like to see them play.”

Young was pleased with the team’s effort late in the game even though they were trailing. “I told them how proud of them I was. They didn’t fold. I was happy they never stopped fighting, that’s important for a young team.”

One Troy player who had a breakout game according to Young was freshman Allie Coldwell. Young said she played well on both ends of the court, but shined offensively. “Put her in a 1-on-1 situation and she’ll score the majority of the time,” Young said.

Young also pointed to the fourth quarter play of Kaitlyn Downey and Olivia Roach as providing a spark for the team.

Logan Beckman of Thompson Falls was the game’s high-scorer with 17 points.

Young said the Bluehawks were a physical team that outworked the Lady Trojans on the boards.

Next up for the Lady Trojans (0-2, 1-3) is the Libby Loggers on Thursday. “Coach May is a great coach. Right from the start they’ll give us pressure. It will be a real good lesson for the young players,” said Young.
