Rough weekend for Lady Trojan hoopsters

After a close home loss Friday to Bigfork, 48-53, the Lady Trojans took a beating on the road against Ronan on Saturday, 31-54.

Troy girls’ coach Justin Young attributed Saturday’s loss to the high emotions of Friday’s close game against Bigfork.

“We came out flat against Ronan after the high emotions from the night before,” Young said. “It was like an emotional hangover from Friday’s game.”

The Troy girls started off strong against Bigfork, trailing by five after the first quarter, but keeping an even pace in the second. They headed into the locker room at halftime trailing 24-29.

The third quarter was all Troy, as they outscored the visitors by nine, taking a four-point lead into the final stanza. The Lady Trojans, though, just couldn’t hold on as Bigfork reeled off 18 points to Troy’s nine to escape Troy with a 53-48 win.

“It was a good game for us,” Young said. “I’m very proud of the way our girls fought against a very good Bigfork ball club.”

Saturday was a different story, as the girls came out flat and just couldn’t recover against an aggressive Ronan team. Troy outscored Ronan in the fourth, 13-9, but it was a case of too little, too late as Ronan cruised to a 54-31 victory.

Young highlighted the performance of freshman guard Allie Coldwell, who scored 29 against Bigfork and another 14 against Ronan. “She put on a great show for fans, coaches and even the referees,” Young said. “It was great to watch her.”

Aurora Becquart also contributed 10 points in each of the games.

The Lady Trojans have two games left in the regular season, at home against Eureka on Friday and on the road against Mission on Saturday. Following that they will have a play-in game against Eureka or Thompson Falls on Feb. 17.

“Our girls have improved with every game they’ve played,” Young said. “We’ve yet to play our best basketball. If we put it all together we can move on this year. It’s going to take a solid week of practice and hard work, but we can do it.”
