Lady Loggers split games

Frenchtown shot 62 percent from the field on their way to a convincing win over the Lady Loggers at the Ralph Tate Gym on Saturday night, 58-40.

The coaches played a chess match to start the game, with both making a number of substitutions looking for the right lineup. The Lady Broncs had doubled up on Libby by the end of the first, holding a 12-6 lead.

“They take the ball to the basket and we needed to stop it and we didn’t,” said Libby head coach Jim May. “In the first half we got in foul trouble helping and guarding them,” he said.

By the end of the half, Frenchtown had extended their lead and held a 27-18 advantage.

The Lady Loggers came out in the third quarter and put together some nice offensive sets. With about three minutes to play they had moved within striking distance, down 24-31. But Libby would be held scoreless the rest of the quarter, and the Lady Loggers went into the final quarter down 24-41.

Both teams played with a high level of intensity for the rest of the quarter and scoring was even between the teams.

Coach May said he would like to see his team improve in a few areas as the season nears its end. “Consistent footwork on defense, it’s really good sometimes and then it isn’t. Offensively being more strategic, and knowing where the attack points are. We’re getting closer, but it’s still a struggle,” May said.

The coaches for both teams expect to see each other again in the first game of the divisional tournament. Next for the Lady Loggers is an away game against Eureka on Feb. 12.

Dayln Germany led the Loggers (3-3, 8-7) with 12 points. Madison Monigold scored 8 points and Hailey Craig chipped in with 7.

Haley Cyr scored a game-high 19 points and Williams added 17 for Frenchtown (5-2 in conference, 10-5 overall).

On Friday, the Lady Loggers trailed Whitefish going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Bulldogs in the final quarter to get the win, 37-29.

Libby trailed for most of the game, but managed to hold Whitefish to just three points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
